GS #32: Instead of adding effort, try reducing resistance
Is there something you know would help your business but you just can't seem to sit down and do it? Instead of "trying harder," get curious about what invisible forces are holding you back and try reducing the friction.
Thanks to those you who filled out the survey at the bottom of last week's newsletter! Seems like the majority of you enjoy the scannable, 3-tip format. 👍 Don't worry, though, for all of you who love one main takeaway, we're going to do our best to keep the tips to one main theme at a time, so hopefully everybody gets a little something they're looking for. 🎉

on reducing resistance
At the start of the year, I (Caroline) told myself I’d finally get back to making YouTube videos. But here we were, two weeks into January, and I still hadn't sat down to hit record. At first, I chalked it up to being busy with other priorities, but deep down, I knew that was just an excuse.
So, I got curious. I took five minutes and wrote in my notebook:
📝 “What thoughts, beliefs, and feelings are holding me back from recording videos?”
What came out was a list of invisible boulders standing between me and my intention. I wrote things like: “Setting up is hard and takes time; It doesn’t feel fun, it feels like a chore; I have to get ready first and don't always feel like it.”
Once I saw those obstacles clearly, I realized I didn't necessarily have to put forth more effort—instead I could try just reducing my resistance by tackling these obstacles one by one.
I went with the most minimal gear setup. I did heatless curls the night before filming day so I didn't have to spend any time on my hair. I put myself in the mindset of FaceTiming with a friend so it felt more fun. And you know what? It worked. I finally sat down and did the damn thing.
So, this week, let’s explore how reducing resistance—not just muscling through—can help you do more of what matters in your business.

What's holding you back from launching more?
👩🏻🦰 👋: If you already have a digital product offer that has garnered some sales, but you are still searching for ways to grow your top line revenue, you could be overlooking a very obvious answer to your problem:
Launch more often.
I know, I know, it sounds too easy. But we see it over and over again—business owners convinced they're being "too salesy" so they launch only once or twice a year and their revenue plateaus.
Now, caveat here, if your answer to why aren't you launching more is "I don't want to," that is a completely valid answer and more power to ya! We do twice a year launches when we could do several more because those two launches generate enough income for us.
BUT, if you have growth goals this year and you're used to doing two launches, maybe consider testing three or four.
Now, if you read that and immediately your next thought was UGH. I hate launching, then keep reading, because this is where reducing resistance comes in!
📝 Ask yourself: What’s making your launches feel hard? And how can you reduce that friction? Reflect on your last launch and identify what thoughts, beliefs, and feelings are holding you back from adding another launch or two to your plan this year.
🌟 Action item: Maybe dip your toe in by planning a low-pressure “mini-launch” for an existing offer that wasn't on your calendar. Focus on the one to two things creating the most resistance, and see if you can reduce the friction. Then, be amazed how magically doing more promotion brings in *gasp* more sales for your business!

Reduce resistance for your best marketing channel
👨🏻🦲 👋: Most of us know which of our marketing channels brings us the most traffic or engagement. But are you leaning into your best content channel enough? Often, the answer is no. Why? You guessed it, resistance.
Maybe posting on YouTube feels time-consuming. Or maybe your newsletter takes so much effort you avoid sending it regularly. Instead of adding more pressure to “just do it,” ask: What’s the hold up here?
- 🎯 Step #1 - Pinpoint your best channel. Which one grows your audience and brings in sales consistently? AND you enjoy working on?
- 🔍 Step #2 - Write down why you’re not showing up there more often. (It’s tedious, takes too long, or feels overwhelming.)
- 🛠️ Step #3 - Reduce the friction. Can you batch your work? Simplify the process? Add an element of fun?
🌟 Action item: This week, take one small step to make your best marketing channel easier so you can show up more consistently.

Adding more FUN into every day
👩🏻🦰 👋: Speaking of fun....
I honestly think we don't take FUN seriously enough in business. Let me explain.
So many of us decided to go into business to avoid soul-sucking jobs that made each day feel like a slog.
And yet, when we become our own bosses, we forget that WE make the rules now. We are in control of the vibe, so why not be intentional about making each day enjoyable.
FUN is such an underrated tool for reducing resistance. When things are fun, they're way more appealing to our brains.
So whether it's adding sing-along music to my work sessions for monotonous tasks, or Jason and I creating meaningless point systems and competitions for silly projects, or rewarding ourselves with 15 minutes of Tetris99 on the Nintendo Switch (yes, we actually do this)—we are always looking for ways to add fun into the day.
🌟 Action item: This week, try one fun twist on a task you normally avoid and notice how it changes your resistance.
